Emmy the Great – ‘Swimming Pool’
Emmy the Great's debut album "First Love" was named one of the best of the year by The New York Times. Her new album -- cunningly-titled "Second Love" -- just came out. She joined us on stage in New York, for a special rendition of her song "Swimming Pool." Check out a video of the performance below.
A Farewell to Prince – ‘Crazy You’
Prince has been the soundtrack to some of the greatest moments of our lives. By now you know he passed away at the age of 57 on Thursday, April 21. We never had the good fortune of interviewing him... but for our first-ever "soundtrack" segment, Yukimi Nagano of the band Little Dragon put the beautiful Prince song "Crazy You" on her playlist. Hear a bit of that segment from back in 2011.
Parquet Courts Mix Up Music for a Mask and Marrow Dinner Party
Parquet Courts is a band based in Brooklyn by-way-of Austin and are banner-carriers for good ol' guitar-bass-and-drum indie rock. And they prove it can still be smart and surprising. Their latest album "Human Performance" has earned praise from everyone from Pitchfork to Spin. Two of the band's members, Austin Brown and Sean Yeaton, cook up a playlist.
Heron Oblivion DJ a Chicken Shack Party
Heron Oblivion is one part peaceful folk rock crooning and one part heavy psych guitar. Pitchfork says their songs "slip easily between dynamics --harmony to dissonance, quiet to loud." Their self-titled EP is in stores now. Check out their playlist full of great guitar licks and drums firing on all cylinders.
Duncan Sheik Blends Synths, Satire in ‘American Psycho’
Duncan Sheik has been penning pop music since the '90s, when his tune "Barely Breathing" was a top 20 hit. But these days he may be best known as a Broadway composer, and his latest stage project may also be his most unlikely: He's written the music and lyrics for a musical adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' satirical horror novel, "American Psycho." He tells Rico why there's a little Patrick Bateman in all of us.
Quilt Covers us with Chill Vibes
We caught up with the four members of the band Quilt a few weeks back at Marfa Myths -- an arts and culture festival co-sponsored by their record label, Mexican Summer. Quilt have a new album out called “Plaza.” Here they are with a playlist to chill by.
Tindersticks Infuse a Playlist With Bittersweet Memories
Playing DJ this week is Stuart Staples of the beloved UK band Tindersticks. Their literate, atmospheric pop has graced the soundtrack of "The Sopranos," and of six films by the auteur Claire Denis. The band just celebrated their 25th anniversary by releasing their 11th studio LP "The Waiting Room."
M. Ward DJs a Party Full of People Whose Names He Can’t Recall
Portland-based M. Ward, along with Zooey Deschanel, is half of the nostalgia-pop duo She & Him. But Ward has been releasing acclaimed solo albums full of smart indie folk since the late '90s. His latest, called "More Rain," came out this week. He spins a dinner party soundtrack filled with great guitar licks.
