This week: “Jane Eyre” director Cary Fukunaga horses around… The history of a not-so-bitter pill… and we toss back a painkiller brunch. Plus, a joke from jewelry designer Annie Costello Brown and a truth-telling tune from Dutch indie-modster M-JO.

A History Lesson with Booze: Aspirin and “Bloody Mary Shooter”
This week in 1897, a young Bayer chemist named Felix Hoffman invented aspirin as we know it (and then used the same procedure to create another, far less innocuous pharmaceutical). For a healthy heart, listen to this history once a day, then take two of these and call us in the morning:
“The Bloody Mary Shooter” as invented by Brian O’Korn of the Brillobox in Pittsburgh, PA – home of Bayer’s U.S. HQ.
In a shaker over ice, add:
- 1 1/2 oz. Boyd and Blair vodka
- Black peppercorns (steeped in the vodka for 2 days)
- 1/2 oz. tomato juice
- 1/2 oz. juice of roasted lemons
- healthy dash of Sriracha sauce
Shake and serve, thereby curing your hangover headache… with another hangover headache.
Guest of Honor: Cary Fukunaga
Director Carey Fukunaga turned heads with his incredibly assured feature filmmaking debut – the immigrant drama Sin Nombre. That film won him a Best Director nod at Sundance. Now he’s confounding expectations again with his choice for a follow-up: an adaptation of Charlotte Bronte’s 19th-century Gothic romance Jane Eyre. The much-lauded pic hits theaters this weekend. Cary chats with Rico about pigeonholes, Bronte versus Austen, and his lead actor’s equine allure.
One For The Road:M-JO – “My Only Truth”
Dutchman Mark De Jonge – aka “M-JO)” – has been making lo-fi pop-rock for years, both on his own and as part of a loose collective of folkies and rockers known as “The Amsterdam Songwriter’s Guild.” Equally at home as an indie balladeer or a mod-rocker, his song “My Only Truth” leans towards the latter – a Swingin’ London-esque ode to love as the ultimate information resource. It’s off his forthcoming album “A Brand New Universe.” Best listened to when defiantly turning off the television.
