Episode 43: Holly Golightly, Peace, and Sustainable Dinner Parties

Holly Golightly and Lawyer Dave/Alison Wonderland

This Week: Garage-country songsters Holly Golightly & Lawyer Dave pack heat… a piece about peace… and Brendan sustains interest in sustainable dinner parties.

Icebreaker: Phil Hay
Phil Hay, producer of “The Dungeon Masters,” — a new documentary about the lives of Dungeons and Dragons enthusiasts — summons forth a 5th-level joke that will surely do at least 2d10 of damage to your funnybone.

Small Talk: Angry Snowmen, Designer Abductions, The Bollywood Horror
The staff at Marketplace tell you about the news stories your dinner guests probably missed.

A History Lesson With Booze: The Peace Sign and “The CND
This week back in 1958, designer Gerald Holtom created a symbol to be displayed by marchers in England’s first-ever anti-nuke protest. Originally formed to mimic the military semaphore codes for “N” and “D” (i.e. “Nuclear Disarmament”), Holtom later admitted the symbol represented himself — a peace-lover in despair. Hear the tale of Holtom’s famed creation, then gain some inner peace by ingesting the drink it inspired.

The CND, as created for the DPD by Luke O’Toole at The Rockwell Bar in London, UK:

Guest of Honor: Holly Golightly
Back in the ’90s, Holly Golighty co-founded Britain’s beloved Thee Headcoatees, a group of female vocalists (backed by Billy Childish’s Thee Headcoats) who churned out raw, fun garage-punk. But Golightly’s forthcoming release Medicine County (with collaborator and one-man band Lawyer Dave) leans more towards atmospheric southern twang. Holly and Dave chat with Rico about bears, The White Stripes and a holly jolly handgun.

The Main Course: Sustainable Dinner Parties
The Sustainable Table — a group dedicated to showing people how to cook and eat in a way that doesn’t destroy the world — has created something called “the Sustainable Dinner Party Kit.” Rather than slapping them with a lawsuit, Brendan chats with the group’s Dawn Brighid about what’s in the kit, and why.
