A History Lesson With Booze: The Peace Sign and “The CND”
This week back in 1958, designer Gerald Holtom created a symbol to be displayed by marchers in England’s first-ever anti-nuke protest. Originally formed to mimic the military semaphore codes for “N” and “D” (i.e. “Nuclear Disarmament”), Holtom later admitted the symbol represented himself — a peace-lover in despair. Hear the tale of Holtom’s famed creation, then gain some inner peace by ingesting the drink it inspired.

Back in the ’90s, Holly Golighty co-founded Britain’s beloved Thee Headcoatees, a group of female vocalists (backed by Billy Childish’s Thee Headcoats) who churned out raw, fun garage-punk. But Golightly’s forthcoming release Medicine County (with collaborator and one-man band Lawyer Dave) leans more towards atmospheric southern twang. Holly and Dave chat with Rico about bears, The White Stripes and a holly jolly handgun.
