Elizabeth Gilbert, the woman who launched a thousand book clubs with her 2006 best-seller “Eat, Pray, Love,” is back with a new novel. “The Signature of All Things” takes us another tour, of sorts, but this one is of high-society in the 1800s, where merchants and scientists throw elegant balls – like the one in this excerpt. This fete is based in part on a real party of the era, as observed by the poet John Keats.
